Climate Change

What is Climate Change? How is it different from Weather?

Most of us have already known what weather is. Weather is the changes we see and feel outside from day to day. It might rain one day and be sunny the next. Sometimes it is cold. Sometimes it is hot. Weather also changes from place to place. While climate is the usual weather of a place. Climate can be different for different seasons. A place is probably commonly warm and dry in the summer season. The same place may be cool and wet in the winter. Different places can have different climates.

Climate change is a change in the usual weather found in a place. This could be a change in how plenty rain a place generally gets in a 12 months. Or it could be a change in a place's usual temperature for a month or season. Climate change is also a change in Earth's climate. This could be a change in Earth's usual temperature. Or it could be a change in where rain and snow usually fall on Earth. Weather can change in just a few hours. Climate takes hundreds or even millions of years to change.

Many things can cause climate to change. Earth's distance from the sun can change. The sun can send out more or less energy. Oceans can change. When a volcano erupts, it can change our climate. Most scientists say that humans can change climate too. People drive cars, heat and cool their houses, and cook food. All those things take energy. One way we get energy is by burning coal, oil and gas. Burning these things puts gases into the air. The gases cause the air to heat up. This can change the climate of a place. It also can change Earth's climate.

Why is Climate Action Important?

As we all know in the 1800s, human activities have changed drastically. Especially since the revolution industry in Great Britain, people have been burning fossil fuels for coal, oil, and gas. Burning fossil fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and raising temperatures. One of the example of the gas emissions are carbon dioxide and methane.

Climate change happens because human activities damage the environment, the earth, the place that we're living in. Activities such as clearing land and forests, using gasoline to run a motorcycle, and piling up garbage in the landfill. If we don't do anything to solve it, it will cost us a lot more. We can even see some of the problems it has caused: food and water scarcity. This is the matter that we have to take into our own hands.

Is it too late to help solve the problem or take act?

No matter what we do now, it's too late to avoid climate change. So we will need to adapt to it to some extent. However, we still have plenty of scope to limit the worst impacts. Since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2016, there has been a strong shift in climate ambition.

What can we do as a student to help solve the problem?

Everyone has a part to play in the fight against climate change, especially students. Many young adults across the country want to get involved. Here are 3 ways that you can help fight climate change.

  1. Educate yourself

While advocating for change and getting involved is important, it is important that you know the reasons behind doing so. Knowing will help you be able to make more informed decisions and make sustainable changes in your behavior and lifestyle.

  1. Reduce your carbon footprint

Make sure the lights are off if you are the last to leave your classrooms, take shorter showers, and consume less meat and dairy products are all great ways you can reduce your personal footprint.

  1. Using public transport to travel to and from school or university.

Most of the emissions from the transport sector are produced by private vehicles such as cars. Compared with driving alone, taking public transportation reduces CO2 emissions by 45%, decreasing pollutants in the atmosphere and improving air quality.
